Is it possible that after a few bad experiences with local women, you are now considering the possibility of taking an overseas bride? Maybe you have a taste for adventure or are intrigued by what is unfamiliar. Whatever the reason, below are some answers to questions you may have.

1. Are overseas brides only for losers who can’t find partners in their own countries?

Of course not. It is an unfortunate truth that overseas brides sometimes attract the sorts of men that nobody back home wants, but they represent only a fraction of the men who choose overseas brides. Don’t forget that a couple of decades ago people considered “computer dating” to be a way for nerds to find dates – but today it has become a popular and accepted way to find a partner.

2. Are mail order brides all money hungry green card hounds?

Mostly not. Be careful of course – it IS a jungle out there. Just as loser men seek “African mail order brides“, so do scamstresses see Western men as walking green cards (with luck they’ll all end up married to the losers). You should at least consider the services on an international matchmaking agency rather than going it alone on the free Internet sites, because if they’re reputable, then part of their fees go towards weeding out the scammers.

3. What do these women want, anyway?

The good ones want the same thing local women want -home, family, children, and love. As for the bad ones – well, need I even go into it? The point is that there are good ones out there.

4. Why are these women looking abroad for men?

A lot of reasons:

(i) They may be facing a life of poverty at home.

(ii) Their culture may relegate women to a low social status – after all, in some cultures a wife is considered little more than a maid / nanny / baby factory.

(iii) “Western guys look like movie stars” – I’m serious. Asia is the only part of the world where I get told I look like Mel Gibson. Well, we’re both white, but I’m fairly certain that’s about where the resemblance ends. But thanks anyway, Hollywood! .

(iv) It’s cold at home! If you were a Russian woman, wouldn’t you have to seriously consider a proposal from a man who lived in Orlando?

1.The Queen of Diamonds

If you are romantic, then avoid this one if you can. A dead giveaway: if the word “generous” appears in her profile, then head for the hills (unless she’s talking about herself – in that case she may be a Green Card Mama). These women sell themselves to the highest bidder – and just in case think you’re in no danger just because you’re not rich, remember that if your mail order bride is from a poor country and you are at least class, you’re probably rich by her standards. The Queen of Diamonds type can be further subdivided into two varieties – the Good Queen and the Wicked Queen. The Good Queens are quite straightforward with honest intentions – it’s normal and accepted in many cultures for a woman to marry for financial reasons. The Wicked, on the other hand, wants to trick you into believing that she loves you. If your Wicked Queen is beautiful, there’s a good chance that once you get her home she’ll find someone richer than you are.

2. The Green Card Mama

This one wants to marry a place, not a person – and a husband will get them through immigration a lot easier than a rubber dinghy on the Rio Grande. Some of these will sneak past you before you even get out of the airport; others will wait for the right moment to hit the highway. Some are happy to live as illegal immigrants; others will wait for their green card to arrive before announcing “I’m sorry sweetie, it just won’t work!”

Russian girls grow up fast. The economical and political situation in modern Russia often forces them to start work even in high school to make their living and help their families. Many teenage Russian girls prefer to work as waitresses or dancers in the international travel industry, because this lets them into a completely different world, where money is not a problem and fun never ends. This does not mean that they are selling their bodies and souls for a big tip. Our advice is never to make any hints about this to your date.

These girls start struggling with life early and desperately and foreigners should respect them. Western society is full of gold digging ladies who will cheat on you and laugh in your face just because you have said something not in time. Unlike them Russians are loyal and polite partners in relationships and will expect the same from you.

Modern Russian tradition provides for the engagement ceremony from two weeks to one year before marriage. Usually the bridegroom should prepare a romantic atmosphere and easy mood, as well as being in possession of the engagement ring. The family’s opinion is not so important nowadays though our advice is to pay attention to this as well as to your beloved.

After you have received the exciting “yes” of your future wife, it is time to meet her family if you have not still done this. You will be expected to act with modesty and respect. In Russia age differences matter and no matter the fact that you have achieved much in life, education and prosperity, you should not overexpose your self esteem.

Be careful what you say. Many Russians nowadays understand English though they can not speak it so any spoken thought that are not very kind should be kept private.

Local people are warm and hospitable and marriage is extremely precious moment in everyone’s life. Wedding ceremonies are turned into big parties lasting sometimes more than two or three days. Be sure that you will meet various family members from grandparents to far cousins and aunts who have come to share this happy moment with you.

Do not neglect them dreaming only to retire with your bride. Prepare for many hugs and kisses from people who you barely know or have not seen at all. This is their way to show you that they like you and accept you in the family.

Your Russian girl will be next to you during these dramatic days for every foreigner. If you have questions regarding the rituals and customs, do not be afraid to ask. You are not expected to know everything and she will love to explain to you the whats and why something is happening.

Let’s start out with the $64 question – why do women seek to marry overseas and leave the Ukraine? One of the reasons (not well known in the West) is that Ukranian and Russian women outnumber men at home. That’s because the mean life expectancy of Ukranian men is considerably lower than Ukranian women. This is partly due to rampant alcoholism along with several other factors. Naturally the primary motivation is economics – these women are acutely aware that the standard of living in Western countries is much higher than it is in their home country. That doesn’t mean that they are only after your money and will make bad wives. That depends on individual character. So take all the time you need to choose a good one.

Perhaps the wisest way to begin your search is to select a reputable international matchmaking agency. You will need to travel to the Ukraine (preferably not in the winter!) to meet the candidates personally. Out there you will be introduced to dozens of eager, eligible and beautiful women. The way the process works, you will have a date of at most a couple of hours with each candidate. Don’t be concerned because you’ll have plenty of opportunity to get to know your favorites later. The international matchmaking services take precautions to protect these women from predatory men who pretend to be interested in marriage in order to take a sex tour of the Ukraine.

Once you have identified a favorite, be sure to take the time to get to know her, no matter how much of a hurry she may seem to be in. It would be foolhardy to bring one home after your first trip abroad. Unfortunately, the popular image of the alcoholic, abusive loser who takes a foreign bride because no local woman will marry him is sometimes accurate. It would certainly be painting with too broad a brush to say that all American men who seek international brides are like this, the abusive personality does seem to be well represented among men seeking bride from overseas. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it – the foreign bride often knows very little about her husband when she comes over. By the time she discovers who he really is, she is far from home, economically dependent, unable to afford to go back home, and sometimes pregnant. Abusers sometimes take full advantage of this situation by forcing their brides to submit to treatment that few American women would put up with.

(2) Citizenship in a prosperous Western nation greatly increases their position in the marriage market. The hope of a new life in rich America (or some other Western country) is certainly the top reason why women from third world countries wish to marry Western men (if you don’t think so, ask yourself how many of these women pursue men from Peru or Indonesia). Since the number of women is far greater than the number of Western men looking for them, supply and demand favors the Western man. It thus becomes no problem at all for a man in his 50s to marry a 20-year-old Chinese model, for example.

(3) A lot of American men don’t like American women. One could say that opposite attract, but complaints abound among a certain segment of American men that feminism has gone too far, that it no longer has anything to do with equal rights or fairness, and that it has morphed US women into a third gender – neither masculine nor feminine, confused about their gender identity, and forever competing rather than cooperating to prove that “women can do anything men can do”. This silent war between the sexes creates a competitive atmosphere, some say, that destroys any chance for true intimacy between spouses. Because of this, American men turn to foreign countries to find a bride (and American women increasingly look overseas for husbands!).
